A PETITION with more than 200 signatures has been handed in to Powys County Councillors asking for yellow lines to be extended at a dangerous junction in Welshpool.

Retired driving instructor and tennis coach Arthur Billington has been campaigning for years to make the junction of Dol-y-Felin estate and Brook Street safer.

He believes the parked vehicles make it difficult for drivers to exit the estate as they cannot see oncoming traffic, coming from the Raven Square roundabout that links to the A458 road towards Llanfair Caereinion.

Last week Mr Billington has presented a petition, signed by more than 200 people, to Councillor Phyl Davies, Portfolio Holder for Highways, Recycling and Assets, and Welshpool County Councillor for the Llanerchyddol ward Graham Breeze.

Just over two years ago Mr Billington handed in a petition of 220 signatures to the Council after he led a campaign for double yellow lines.

Mr Billington, said: “I just fear for people’s safety coming out of Dol-y-Felin.

“You can see traffic coming from the right, coming up from Welshpool, but it’s difficult to see the traffic coming down.

“Traffic parked here makes it difficult for drivers to see oncoming traffic.

“I believe that the yellow lines on this part of the road are too short and need to be extended so that we can have a better view of the road.

“You have to come out a fair way into the road to be able to see if there are any cars coming.”

Councillor Graham Breeze supports Mr Billington and said: “I have been pressing for improvements since the yellow line scheme was implemented as the current system has made getting out of the Dol-Y-Felin junction extremely dangerous, particularly when larger vehicles such as horse boxes are being parked there all day.

“The situation is being looked at as part of a bigger picture about roads and parking in Welshpool.”

The petition was given to Cllr Phyl Davies, cabinet portfolio holder for Highways who said he would raise the issue with highways officers and see what can be done.
