Syrian orphans have received gift bags from a Llanidloes-based charity.

‘From the Heart of Wales’ sent traditional gift bags to 140 children during Eid Al-fitr.

Eid is an Islamic celebration marking the end of the fasting period known as Ramadan.

Generous donations raised at Llanidloes Market, and by the people and businesses of Llanidloes and surrounding communities, made it possible to send the gifts to Syria.

Each bag contained a mix of toys, sweets, pens, notepads and hygiene products for older children.

“The children are in such a desperate situation, still living within the devastated country, and they have lost their families,” said Ceri Jones, a From the Heart of Wales representative.

“It’s not much, but we hope that it shows that Wales cares about their plight and brings them some happiness”.

Next year, From the Heart of Wales aims to send double the amount of gift bags to Syria.

The charity collects food, clothes, hygiene products and medical supplies which are sent to Syria by container ship from South Wales. There is a collection point in Co-op, Llanidloes, and they hope to have one in Newtown soon.
