Residents in Llanrhaeadr Ym Mochnant have reacted angrily to parking proposals put forward for the village by Powys County Council.

Over 100 people including local county councillor and cabinet member for finance Aled Davies attended a public meeting held at the village hall on Friday, May 11 to discuss the scheme put forward by the council to enforce parking restrictions in the area.

The county council say changes to parking within the village are required after problem locations had been identified by police and the community council. The scheme will make large parts of Market Street "no waiting" zones, as well as a problem area for turning buses near the Plough public house.

But up-in-arms residents say they have not been adequately consulted on the proposals and that the scheme will cause damage to local businesses due to the lack of adequate parking in the village.

"I’m really proud of the way the village has responded to this, there’s a lot of positive energy directed at solving this problem," said meeting organiser Angela Ramsell.

"Everyone in attendance had objections to all or parts of the proposed scheme to put parking restrictions throughout the village.

"In essence, the community wants Powys County Council to withdraw the current proposals and support the community to undertake a full impact study, to include all parking provision."

Other residents who attended the meeting say the proposed changes will have an impact on the local economy, as tourists may pass through the area if they can't find somewhere to park.

"It will have a massive effect on business in the area and people visiting will just move on to the next village if we have double yellow lines everywhere," said resident Emma Wilde Hale.

"It concerns me that we have a situation where but for the actions of a local resident who stumbled across the plans no-one would have been aware of any of it."

Powys County Council say meetings and discussions have taken place to decide how to address nuisance and inconsiderate parking within the village, and at their meeting of September 6, 2017, the council's Montgomeryshire Committee had resolved to support the draft proposals.

"Proposal plans to address these concerns have been drawn up and considered by the community council and the local member, and subsequently modified to accommodate requested revisions which were supported by the local highway authority," say the council in a consultation document published online.

"The community council and the local member have expressed their support for the extents of the modified waiting proposals."

An emergency meeting was held last night, Wednesday 16, between Llanrhaeadr Ym Mochnant Community Council and members of a newly formed volunteer 'Parking Proposals Working Party'.

"It was agreed that it is urgent and essential that everyone makes an individual representation to the Traffic & Travel Manager of Powys County Council," added Angela Ramsell.

"Thank you to the Community Council for arranging the meeting at such short notice and for the volunteers who attended too."

Residents have until Sunday, May 20 to register their objections with the council as part of the consultation process.
