There will be no paediatric service at Withybush for Pembrokeshire's children if the health board proposals go ahead.

Following the announcement of a 12 week consultation a number of questions were put to Hywel Dda Health Board about the impact on people in Pembrokeshire.

All three options up for consultation would see Withybush Hospital downgraded to a community hospital, raising fears about what provision will be in place for children.

The health board confirmed that the Paediatric Ambulatory Care Unit (PACU) which provides care 10am to 6pm will be removed from Haverfordwest and put in the new build hospital further east.

What is still not clear is if other services such as audiology, child development or back room testing in the microbiology and biochemistry labs will remain.

The health board answered: "The Community Hospitals would be able to deliver a wide range of services that do not require a medical or surgical rota, i.e. overnight doctors."

A minor injury unit would likely cater for non-serious problems including broken bones (fractures), dislocations, sprains and strains, assaults,  wounds and minor burns, insect stings and foreign bodies to eyes, ears and nose.

Not all will have x-ray facilities.

Once again people are urged to take part in the consultation and ensure their voices are heard.

"This is a consultation, so no decisions have been made. We are seeking the views of all residents on the location of services, types of services to be delivered and the impact of the proposals on people in all parts of Hywel Dda.

"The proposals involve the provision of health and care and are much broader than simply hospital services. We want to provide the opportunity for residents in all counties to have a say on proposals to locate a new hospital (Urgent and Planned Care; or Urgent only) on a site somewhere in between Narberth and St Clears.

"We also want views on the impact for Pembrokeshire residents on splitting planned and urgent care, the best way to do this and on which site," said a health board spokesman.

Work to develop the community model could begin straight away said the health board and as building a new hospital would be a "potentially lengthy process", if agreed, it would not want to wait before making changes.

"Prevention and early intervention is a key element of our community model, and community hubs and hospitals are important ways to support this. The sooner we are able to start providing more services within the community and closer to people’s homes the sooner we can start to see the changes we need to deliver," he added.
