ANTI-NUCLEAR campaigners from all across the UK will be descending on Machynlleth next week to take part in a one day conference.

The Nuclear Free Local Authorities (NFLA) Welsh Forum is holding a special one day conference with four other groups (WANA, PAWB, CADNO, CND Cymru) and three supporting environmental / Welsh language NGOs on Saturday, April 14, in the Owain Glyndwr Parliament House Centre from 11am to 3.30pm.

By the close of the conference, the groups are expected to make a “Powys Declaration” against Nuclear Energy outlining the next steps in their campaign.

Speakers include Dr Carl Clowes of Pobl Atal Wylfa B (People Against Wylfa B), who is a longtime campaigner against the building of a new nuclear power station on Anglesey. Horizon, the company looking to develop Wylfa, will be putting in a Development Consent Order (DCO), the planning application to build Wylfa Newydd, in the next few weeks.

Other speakers include Brian Jones, of CND Cymru.

Organisers believe 2018 is a critical year for whether new nuclear facilities are developed and / or if renewable alternatives like tidal, wind and solar are developed instead.

Secretary of the NFLA Wales Forum, Sean Morris, said: “The seminar is a free event to all who are interested in the impact of new nuclear and waste on Wales and what alternative energy solutions exist.

“This meeting has been jointly organised by the Welsh Anti-Nuclear Alliance, the Nuclear Free Local Authorities Welsh Forum, People against Wylfa B, the Trawsfynydd concerned group CADNO and CND Cymru with support from Friends of the Earth Cymru and Greenpeace Cymru so that you can hear their views and join with them in the campaign for a nuclear free Wales.”

Workshops will be taking place in the afternoon and include sessions on: Building up Community Energy in Wales, links between civil and defence nuclear sectors.

Also building a South Wales campaign against new nuclear and dumping of radioactive contaminated sediment in the Severn Estuary.
