ANDY DAVIES will break new ground in his glittering career after being called up for Great Britain’s IAU 50km World Championships squad.

The 36 year old forms part of an eight strong British squad which will aim for glory in the searing heat of the Doha-based event in November.

Davies will be preparing for the challenge with training in Kenya before linking up with his Great Britain team-mates.

“It will be tough as I have never raced in the conditions I am expecting to face in Qatar but I am proud to get the call and I will prepare the best I can and ensure I head out to Doha in November as fit and prepared as possible,” said Davies.

“It will be another new test for me but one I am looking forward to it like all my races.”

The Newtown-based long distance athlete, a Welsh vest winner in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland, has enjoyed an excellent season so far, ending second in the Cardiff Half Marathon while taking 38th in the BMW Berlin Marathon, posting a new PB of 2:16:55.

Davies tested himself further in last weekend’s World Mountain Running Championships in Slovenia, representing Britain and sealing a ninth place finish with a time of 3:54:39.

Davies admitted the alpine challenge had been a major test.

“I have never ran for that long before to be honest, it was very challenging and we were almost out there for four hours,” said Davies. “I was happy with my time and finish.”

Organisers added an extra 5km to the course at Podbrdo which made for a gruelling challenge for runners from 22 countries.

The Italians prevailed team winners with Davies’ Britain side claiming second place ahead of the Northern Irish.
