HOLLYWOOD A-lister Hugh Grant caused a stir in Rhayader when he called for lunch at Ty Morgans Guesthouse.

The Four Weddings and a Funeral star was driving around the Elan Valley in his Aston Martin last Friday before stopping for lunch at Rhayader’s East Street bistro.

“He had a goat’s cheese ciabatta,” said Andrew Lewis, owner of Ty Morgans.

“Jessie served him and a few of the girls chatted with him and posed for photographs – he seemed like a really nice chap.”

But while most of the staff at Ty Morgans spotted him as soon as he walked through the door, Andrew was only alerted to the BAFTA winner’s presence while carrying out essential repairs in the men’s loos.

“It was quite funny. I was fixing a toilet and all of a sudden Hugh Grant walked in,” he explained.

“I had to take a bit of a double take when he walked into the toilet area. It’s not every day a Hollywood actor walks into your restaurant!”

Another eyewitness to the visit, who asked not to be named, said the actor drove around the Elan Valley before moving on to the town centre where he ate and drank at Ty Morgans.

“There was a real buzz in the town on Friday,” he said.

“I don’t think he stayed long, but it is always nice and a bit of a shock when someone famous arrives in town.”

Eagled-eyed Natasha McFadden, 22, a student nurse, spotted the star in Rhayader and asked if he would pose for a photo.

She said: “He couldn’t have been more obliging or generous with his time. He was a true gentleman.

“He was really down to earth, a really lovely guy.”

Hugh Grant is no stranger to Mid Wales having filmed the hit film comedy The Englishman Who Went Up A Hill But Came Down A Mountain in Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant in 1995.
