THE sudden death of a Milford Haven woman being treated at Withybush Hospital is being investigated by police.
Seventy-five year-old Susan Evans died in the early hours of Monday, November 17 and her family have said they will be following the investigation closely after concerns were raised about aspects of her care.
Mrs Evans, a mother and grandmother, was being treated on a ward at the hospital and had also been receiving care at the Bro Cerwyn centre.
Her son Bill Evans told the Western Telegraph: “An inquest has been opened, there is a process that will have to be completed and we will follow that process closely, especially as we are aware that some general concerns have been expressed about aspects of care at Withybush Hospital and Bro Cerwyn at the moment.
“One thing that I think my mother would want to come out of this is a result that makes it less likely that it will happen to other families in the future and we have that closely in mind at present.”
A hospital whistleblower contacted the Western Telegraph to express grave concerns about the care of Mrs Evans prior to her death.
Police confirmed that Dyfed-Powys officers are investigating the “circumstances surrounding” Mrs Evans’ death.
“Next of kin have been advised and H. M Coroner has been advised.
“As there is an ongoing investigation it would be inappropriate to comment further,” a police spokesman said.
Hywel Dda chief operating officer, Paul Hawkins, said: “Hywel Dda University Health Board offers its deepest sympathies to the family for their loss.
“We are fully cooperating with the ongoing police investigation so no further comment will be made at this time. In any incident such as this, we conduct a thorough internal investigation.”
Pembrokeshire County Council also said it was supporting the health board as it examined the incident.
“Our social services department at Pembrokeshire County Council has supported this lady in the past. We have had no involvement with her since 2011” said a council spokesman.
“A death in these sort of circumstances is very sad and a cause for great concern.”
