Violet Lewis

LEWIS VIOLET "MAY" It is with sadness that we report the death of Violet May Lewis; who passed away at her home on the 19th January 2021, she was aged 80. May was born at the Rheowl Penybont on the 14th February 1940 to Jack and Florence Lewis before moving with her parents and older sister Betty to Penffynon Nantglas Llanwrthwl on the 1st May 1940 where younger brother John was born. May attended Ysfa Primary School and Nantmel Primary School and then onto Bryntirion School Rhayader; she often said she did not enjoy school preferring instead to be at home on the farm and climbing trees with her brother John which she was very proud of being extremely good at. In 1959 she married Vincent Lewis and moved to Blaencwm Llanwrthwl where their children Geoffrey, Gwynfor and Hazel were born, they then moved in 1963 to Troedrhiwdrain Elan Valley where Brian was born. May loved the Elan Valley and would often say that living in the Elan Valley were some of the happiest times of her life. In 1983 she moved with her family to the Elan Village to care for her son Gwynfor who had suffered a serious injury the previous year. May dearly loved all her family and this was shown by the care that she gave Gwynfor for many years to follow. May was pre deceased by her husband Vincent in 2006 and then by Gwynfor in 2016. In the autumn of 2020 she moved to 5 Cae-melin Cwmdauddwr but by now she had been suffering ill health and quite rapidly her health deteriorated until her passing. May bore her illness with great courage and often some humour, comforted by her strong faith and the love of her family, by whom she is sadly missed. A small family funeral service took place at Bethania Baptist Chapel Elan Valley on the 29th January conducted by Pastor Ronald Downey, and the high esteem in which she was held in the community was shown by the many people who lined the route as the funeral courtage made its way down to and through Rhayader on its way to Aberystwyth crematorium. Family mourners were Geoffrey and Anita Lewis son and daughter in law, Hazel and Hywel Evans daughter and son in law, Brian and Sorcha Lewis son and daughter in law. Grandchildren - Daniel, Rhys, Lowri, Carys, Rhian and husband John, Aidan and Sarah. John and Trish Lewis brother and sister in law and niece Wendi and her husband Pete. There were family flowers only and donations were received for several local charities amounting to £1,765. Mays family would like to thank everyone for all the kindness shown; for messages of sympathy, all the cards received, donations given and for the wonderful show of respect as the courtage left for Aberystwyth . Thanks also to Rhayader Doctors Surgery, district nurses, Rhayader Home Support and to the Q-care carers. Finally thank-you to Mike and Suzanne of M.Morgan Lloyd who helped and guided us throughout.
