LAURIE HANNAN (Dr Jazz) Newtonian boy, Laurie Hannan (Dr Jazz) passed away aged 84 at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital on 27th August 2021. Born in Newtown in 1937, Laurie's family were living in Stone Street. He went to school at St Mary's Catholic School in Crescent Street and later to Penygloddfa. At 21 he joined the army to do his National Service where he became a driver. On leaving he qualified as a painter and decorator and ran his own business. Lawrence married Jean, from Shrewsbury, in 1963 settling in Newtown where they had three children Mark, Lorraine and Ceri. The family moved to Shrewsbury in 1977 where Laurie became a qualified Boiler Engineer which he pursued until he retired. However his biggest love was music and from the age of 15 he taught himself the double bass and became an accomplished Jazz musician. He played with many bands including the Ivor Tanner Band and the Griff Stevens Jazz Band. Then, in his later years he formed his own successful Jazz Trio called "Dr Jazz". He leaves behind his wife, Jean, his children Mark, Lorraine & Ceri, his three grandchildren Daisy, Megan and Zac whom he adored and his sister Sylvia.
