Machynlleth is set to host its first ever LGTBQ Pride event, which organisers of the event have called “a labour of love”.

As the Powys town prepares to host the first event celebrating the LGBTQ+ community in its history, organised by newly formed group Machynlleth Pride, who said they were “thrilled” to be bringing the event to the area.

The main event is scheduled to be held on 11am on Saturday, May 18, with a picnic on the lawn of Y Plas. The event should see various activities designed to engage and entertain attendees of all ages.

Machynlleth mayor Jeremy Paige, said "The Town Council is proud to host Mach Pride and it is a testament to our collective dedication towards improving inclusivity.

Highlights include a performance of the Ladies of Llangollen by local storytellers Jane Hoy and Helen Sandler, live performances, informative workshops and family friendly activities.

A spokesperson for Machynlleth Pride added: “Organizing Machynlleth's first Pride event has been a labour of love driven by the deep belief that everyone deserves to feel seen, valued, and celebrated.

“Pride is more than just a celebration; it is a powerful statement of solidarity and acceptance. For too long, LGBTQ+ individuals in rural areas have felt isolated or underrepresented. By bringing Pride to Machynlleth, we are taking a stand to ensure that our LGBTQ+ friends, family, and neighbours know they are an integral part of our community.

“We are thrilled to bring Pride to Machynlleth for the first time. Our goal is to create an inclusive and welcoming environment where everyone can celebrate who they are. This event is not just for the LGBTQ+ community, but for all our allies, friends, and families who support love and equality.

“The inaugural Machynlleth Pride Picnic marks a significant milestone in the town's history and reaffirms its commitment to diversity, acceptance, and unity.”

The event is also backed by several local sponsors, including the Wynstay Hotel, Machynlleth Town Council, Y Plas, Hilltop Tents, Gwen, Glamping Luxury Domes, Tal y Lyn, Magic Lantern, Hermit Crab, The Deco Shop, Dyfi Biomass and Mid Wales Storage and many volunteers.
