Eight candidates named for Powys County Council by-election

The candidates will contest a county council by-election next month for Rhiwcynon ward which includes the village of Tregynon near Newtown.

The hotly contested election will take place on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.

The election was sparked after independent group leader and former cabinet member Heulwen Hulme resigned after seven years serving as a councillor.

The election will see two independent candidates as well as representatives from the Liberal Democrats, the Conservatives, Labour, the Green Party, Reform UK and Plaid Cymru.

The candidates are:

• Richard Edward Amy – Welsh Liberal Democrats
• Ann Jones – Plaid Cymru
• Richard Breese Jones – Independent
• Oliver Lewis – Reform UK
• David Markinson – Independent
• Rhodri Parfitt – The Green Party
• Paul Wixey – Welsh Labour
• John Yeomans – Welsh Conservatives

The council confirmed that anyone needing to register to vote will still have around a week to send off their application.

In a statement, Powys County Council said: “Anyone who isn’t registered to vote have until Thursday, May 16, 2024 in order to vote in this election. To register to vote visit www.gov.uk/registertovote

“Electors should take note that applications to vote by post or requests to change or cancel an existing application must reach the Electoral Registration Officer at County Hall, Llandrindod Wells by 5pm on Friday, May 17, 2024.

“Applications to vote by proxy at this election must reach the Electoral Registration Officer at County Hall, Llandrindod Wells by 5pm on Friday, May 24, 2024. Proxy applications can be found at www.powys.gov.uk/elections
