AN emergency speed restriction is in place along a stretch of the A44 in Powys today and tomorrow (May 7-8) which will see motorists limited to just 10 miles per hour.

Powys County Council (PCC) announced that the emergency speed restriction near New Radnor has been put in place and extended to cover Wednesday, May 8, while Openreach repairs a telegraph pole that is in danger of collapsing.

PCC said the 10mph restriction had been due to be in force from 9am to 5pm today (Tuesday) but this afternoon announced it would extend into Wednesday too.

“Emergency speed restriction to 10mph: A44 New Radnor, Presteigne, is in place on May 7, 2024 (9am-5pm), on behalf of MJ Quinn/Openreach, while they do works to replace a decaying telegraph pole in danger of collapsing,” said Powys County Council's Highways, Transport and Recycling Service on its Facebook page.

An update in the comments section at 2.50pm added: “Works extended till May 8, 2024.”

There will be a 60 metre 'safety zone' on the A44 where the decaying pole is located, and where speed will be limited to 10mph.

This spot is near the junction on to the A481 by the Fforest Inn.
