A teenage motorcyclist was airlifted to hospital in a "serious" condition after a crash close to the the Powys-Shropshire border over the bank holiday weekend.

Following a crash involving a motorbike and a saloon-style car on the A489 at Lydham, between Bishop's Castle and the Powys border at Snead on Monday, May 6, the rider of the motorbike was taken to hospital by West Midlands Air Ambulance.

The crash happened at approximately 12.30pm, with police and fire crews from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service called, soon followed by the air ambulance. The road was closed for several hours during the afternoon for accident investigation work.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “An ambulance, paramedic officer and Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford were sent to the scene where, on arrival, crews discovered a car and motorbike had been involved in a collision.

“The motorcyclist, a teenage boy, was in a serious condition. Medics administered advanced trauma care before he was airlifted to Royal Stoke University Hospital for further treatment.

“A woman from the car was treated for potentially serious injuries and taken via land ambulance to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for further treatment.”

The road remained closed for several hours after the incident, with drivers advised by West Mercia Police to avoid the area as the closure was enforced from the junction with the A488 and at Lydham Heath

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service has also published details of the incident, adding: “One fire appliance was mobilised from Bishops Castle.

"Also, at the scene of the incident were: the Air Ambulance, the Land Ambulance Service and the Police.

"Road traffic collision involving one saloon vehicle and one motorbike. Crews have made vehicle safe."

Fire crews received the stop message, confirming no additional support was needed at the scene, at 1.26pm, however the road remained closed for several hours afterwards.
