Singers from Powys voice choirs blew audiences away as they joined in a special performance at the Royal Albert Hall.

A selection of singers from the Newtown and District Male Voice Choir joined more than 500 choir singers for the Welsh Association of Male Choirs’ tri-annual massed choral event at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Saturday, April 27.

The choir were originally scheduled to perform at the venue in 2021, but were postponed in their trip to London as a result of the Covid-19 Pandemic.

The years-long journey for the choir to reach Britain’s most famous concert hall made their final performance extra special for some members.

Jonathan Davies, the choir’s publicity officer, said: “It was a great honour and a privilege to be part of the event.

OTHER NEWS:

“We were supposed to go in 2021 but weren’t able to, but that made taking the stage on the night even more significant. The idea of performing at the Royal Albert Hall has been hanging over the choir for over three years, so it meant a lot to finally see it go full steam ahead.

“We’d like to thank Claire Hughes for arranging our accommodation in London and sorting everything to do with the event for us.

“There was a lot of pressure to bring our best efforts to the concert, especially in front of a 4,000 strong audience and in such a beautiful building.

County Times: Members of Newtown and District Male Voice Choir at the Royal Albert Hall.

“There were 23 singers from the Newtown choir among the 500 choristers from several choirs, most from across Wales, a few from England and one from as far as Canada. We were all united in our love and passion for male voice choirs.

“We’d also like to thank our musical director Astley Davies and our accompanist for rehearsals John Evans for helping us be properly prepared. There were 16 songs to learn for the concert, some of which were very technical and hard to learn.

“It’s sometimes hard to tell from on stage, but you could tell the audience were completely transfixed by the performance.”

Having returned to Newtown, the choir will be holding a concert at All Saints Church, Newtown on May 11. The event will be an evening of songs and stories about the group’s trip to London and their performance at the Royal Albert Hall.
