PARENTS who want the best for their children could soon be forced to pay full whack for it.

On Tuesday, July 1, Powys County Council's board members will be asked to consider whether high schools should be allowed to subsidise transport for pupils outside of their catchment area.

If the 15 board members vote in favour of not allowing secondary schools to use their delegated budgets to subsidise transport it will result in hundreds of parents having to either move their child to a different school or pay 100 per cent of the transport costs.

The five schools in Powys most likely to suffer are Llanfyllin, Llanfair Caereinion, Welshpool, Llanidloes and Builth Wells.
More than 300 pupils attend Llanfyllin High School from outside of their catchment area.

Kevin Jones,

Abermule 22/06/2008 23:08:32
Both of my daughters go to Llanfair Caereinion High school as it was felt the best school to ensure they had the best education available to them(our opinion)
Newtown High School was closest to us however 5 years ago they were not performing very well, so we chose Llanfair paying for transport since, as it was our choice to send the girls there and accepted we had to pay transport costs.
Politicians keep on saying Education Education Education stating its one the most important service areas for families, If the board members of Powys County Council stop the schools using the budgets to subsidise school transport, its going to damage the lives of an extremely large number of school pupils who only have one chance of a decent education.
Powys County Council should get they own house in order before damaging school pupils education.
I have Board Member who represents our ward and whom I respect, I just hope he takes into account the concerns of his constituents.Councillors should remember they were voted in to represent us and the local community, and to voice our concerns in the council chamber.
If Powys CC go ahead and vote to stop school transport subsidies there will be some very angry parents including myself, there will also be very angry school pupils who's education will be comprimised even destroyed if they have to change schools due to thier parents being unable to afford the full cost.
I can accept an slight % increase due to higher fuel costs, so I ask Powys County County Councillors to actualy listen to thier constituents and do the right thing.
