TWO Welshpool publicans have launched a campaign for separate smoking rooms in public houses.

Elaine Wright and Ali (Paul Johnson), of the Pinewood Tavern, say their petition, calling for Welshpool Town Council's support in attempting to get smoking rooms introduced, is gathering pace.

In less than a week they have gathered almost 200 signatures.
The petition was set up in reaction to a letter from Welshpool Town Council saying a meeting held on the issue saw those present vote against smoking rooms in pubs by 83 to three.

Welshpool Town Council Clerk Robert Robinson said in the letter: "I feel as there was no support there is no point taking this further."

Elaine and Ali hope that with enough support they will be able to get the council to reverse its decision and further explore the possibility of setting up separate smoking rooms in pubic houses.

"We started the petition on Sunday (February 17) lunchtime and already we have filled nine A4 sheets of paper with names of people in support of introducing a smoking room," said Elaine.

"Remarkably about 50 per cent of the people who have supported the campaign are actually non-smokers," she added.

Elaine and Ali said they were not even notified of the Welshpool meeting and they questioned how many of the 86 who voted on the matter actually used public houses.

Speaking about their petition they said: "These are people that are using the pubs. We have no idea who the people who voted at the town council meeting are.

"They might be people who never go near a pub."

Speaking about the fact they were not notified of the meeting they said:"This affects all licensed premises so really they should've all been informed."

Elaine also voiced her disapproval of the ban full stop, she said: "They are taking our rights off us. What are they going to tell us next. You can only drink so much?

"It has affected business, I'm about £1,000 a week down."
Elaine also said that other pubs were now interested in joining the petition and gathering their own signatures.

Well done. It is about time more landlords stood up to this draconian ban as we are all doing at freedom2choose. This is about rights, and every business owner should have that right to say what happens on their premises and then smokers and non-smokers can make an informed choice!! Also, how like our useless councils to have a meeting and tell no-one concerned it was happening - remind anyone of the Reichstag!!

What I find realy nauseating about this government is their hypocrisy. They condone the sale of cigarettes, collect £4 tax on a packet that costs £5, which works out at £52 millions pounds per day, then tell private property owners that they carnt allow a legal product i.e. smoking, to take place on their premises. Pubs are not publically owned, they are privately owned whether smoking takes place on the premises should be the owners choice and no one elses, not the smoker, not the non smoker and definitely not governments. Government controlof private property a principle of communism. The sooner this government is voted out the better. Good luck to this landlady for fighting for her private property rights.

Well done and best of luck. The ban is killing the trade, and HMG are denying this. We need more people like you to join the fight to amend the ban to allow smoking venues and smoking rooms. For every study that shows a risk of harm from passive smoke there are 6 to show no harm. The govt were duped by anti-tobacco. The HSE regulates Workplace Exposure limits for the components of tobacco smoke. None of them come near to exceeding these limits.

ALL pubs should do the same. Like MPs, Councillors are most likely made up of mainly non-smokers and who probably don't visit pubs. MPs and Councillors should go to pubs and clubs to find out for themselves the effects the ban is having.

Whatever happened to the old smoke rooms in public houses, there was always somewhere that smokers could go to enjoy the company of like minded people, without effecting anyone else in the pub, it does seem a shame that men and women in their old age cannot enjoy their leisure time in the pub any more.
