POWYS will be represented by 12 sporting starts at next month’s Commonwealth Games in Australia.

The opening ceremony takes place on Wednesday, April 4 and herald the start a 12 day sporting extravaganza on Australia’s Gold Coast.

Newtown-based marathon runner Andy Davies is joined by Rhayader raised 1,500m runner Tom Marshall and para 100m runner Morgan Jones of Newbridge in the Welsh athletics squad.

Berriew’s Hazel Wilson, Kathy Pearce and Caroline Taylor are joined by Jess Sims of Llandrindod Wells, Builth Wells’ Pauline Wilson and Emma Woodcock, formerly of Presteigne, in the women’s lawn bowls squad.

Knighton’s Phoebe Richards and Brecon’s Delyth Thomas will both be in action for the Welsh women’s hockey team while Montgomery’s Tom Williams completed Powys interest with his call-up to the Welsh rugby seven’s squad this week.

Williams is currently on the way back to fitness with the Ospreys following a broken arm and in Las Vegas for the World Seven’s Series.

Wales Seven’s coach Gareth Williams said: “We love having Tom in our programme, he is an exciting talent.

“We look forward to supporting him through the end of his rehabilitation and returning to competition ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

“We were always eager to have him as part of our wider squad through our regional relationship leading towards the Commonwealth Games.”
