NEWTOWN High School have toasted their sports stars following success in national competitions.

The school’s under 16s boys rugby team booked a place in the final of the RGC North Wales Schools Cup with a 12-7 victory over Brynhyfryd last week.

Tries from Rhys Morris an Isaac Davies with a conversion from Morris and penalty from Jacob Davies earned them a place in the final.

Coach John Thurston said: “Im extremely pleased with how the boys performed. They executed the game plan really well, playing with width and keeping the ball in play as much as possible to tire out the opposition pack.

“As a school we’re extremely proud of their efforts so far in the competition and we now look forward to the final against the winner of the North West Wales semi-final.”

Meanwhile the girls successful under 15s football side celebrated another step toward Welsh Schools glory with Jonny Roberts’ squad reaching the semi-finals.

Newtown progressed on penalties after goals from, Faye Marshall, Tayla Oliver and Carrie Jones secured a 3-3 draw with Penrhyn Bay based Y Creuddyn.

Coach Roberts said: “Both teams acquitted themselves very well on the day. It was nerve wracking but another great game which now means we’ve got a semi final to look forward to at home.”
