THE tennis season has arrived in Mid Wales.
Over the last month Welshpool area sports development officer Ryan Davies has led an initiative aimed at raising interest in the sport among the area’s primary school children.
More than 100 children took part in a Year 3/4 tennis competition at the Flash Leisure Centre
Buttington Trewern won the Year 3 boys event before completing a double by winning the girls event.
Buttington Trewern went on to complete a clean sweep by winning both Year 4 competitions after seeing off the challenge of Guilsfield and Montgomery in the respective finals.
Trewern’s reward is a trip to Newtown Tennis Tennis Club for the Montgomeryshire Finals on Wednesday, June 13.
Davies said: “There was some fantastic performances throughout the day from everyone.”
With their appetite whetted for more tennis an outdoor competition was held at Welshpool High School earlier this month.
Once again schools from across the area were represented at Year 5 and 6 level.
“It was great to see so many children enjoying the sport and thanks to Welshpool High School for hosting the event.”
It is hoped many of the children continue their interest in the sport and join established clubs in the area with Meifod, Montgomery, Churchstoke, Forden, Newtown, Llanymynech, Guilsfield, Llanfair Caereinion and Llanidloes all running several sides in the Montgomeryshire Tennis League which will be contested throughout the summer.
