MALDWYN Leisure Centre hosted the eighth annual junior triathlon camp last week.

The popular event is organised by Powys County Council’s sport development unit in conjunction with Maldwyn Harriers Athletics Club and Newtown Swimming Club who combined to provide 20 coaches and volunteers over two days.

More than 40 children aged between none and 16 took part in the event.

The boys 13-14 age group was won by Ollie Jones of Tregynon in 34:15 with Llanymynech’s Deri McCluskey ending second in 30:30 and Machynlleth’s Guto Childs in third in 33:13.

Llanidloes’ Maddie Morris won the girls 13-14 group in 52:30 from Nadia Francis of Llanidloes in 58:45.

Newtown’s Joel North won the boys 11-12 age group in 32:28 ahead of Llanidloes duo Derwyn Hayes-Gamble in 32:28 and Morgan Hughes in 33:52.

Welshpool’s Maddie Griffiths won the girls 11-12 age group in 31:00 from Welshpool’s Tayia Griffiths in 33:54 and Machynlleth’s Isabel Owen in 37:44.

Meanwhile Llanymynech’s Noah White won the boys 9-10 age group in 20:17 to see off Oswestry’s Jac Williams in 22;19 and Newtown’s Lewis Bebb in 23:09.

Llanfyllin’s Carys Blowers won the girls 9-10 event in 22:29 ahead of Llanidloes’ Molly Edwards in 23:29 and Lilly Powell in 23:51.

Organiser Katie Hamer-Grew said: “The participants were first class as where the volunteers.”

It is hoped athletes will now join Maldwyn Harriers Athletics Club, which train on Wednesdays at Maldwyn Leisure Centre from 6pm, Newtown Swimming Club which train on Tuesdays from 6pm and Hafren Cycling Club which meet in Welshpool every Saturday at 10am.

Meanwhile the popular summer Star Track Athletics scheme will take place at Maldwyn Leisure Centre and open to children aged between seven and 16.
