NEWTOWN’S All Wales Trophy dreams died in a 6-1 semi-final defeat to Swansea on Sunday.

The West Midland Men’s League One side hosted a Swansea side who arrived at Maldwyn Leisure Centre as overwhelming favourites.

Ollie Wheeler starred for the South Wales side and led the scoring with a four goal haul while Rhys Griffiths completed a brace.

However the loudest cheer of the afternoon was reserved for Jack Williams’ late strike which ensured Newtown a consolation.

Captain Tom Hillidge paid tribute to his team and insisted their performance against one of the top sides in Welsh hockey would stand the club in good stead.

“It was a real David versus Goliath battle with Swansea five divisions above us,” said a proud Hillidge.

“It was a great positive performance. We really held our own against the opposition and it was a testament to how far we’ve come this season.

“We created lots of attacking chances but Swansea were clinically superior.

“Overall it was a terrific performance for an ever improving club which will be ready to challenge for the title next season.”

Meanwhile Radnor maintained course for promotion from division two of the South Wales Women’s League with a comfortable 5-0 victory at home to Penarth.

Llinos Samuel starred for the hosts with a four goal haul while a brace from Laura Price-Davies completed the tally and kept Elin Wozencraft’s side in the hunt for the title and promotion with just two games remaining.
