SEREN Lovatt geared up for this weekend’s Thuringia Cup by claiming bronze at the British School Judo Championship in Sheffield.

The Welshpool High School star claimed bronze in her weight division to celebrate a third medal at the annually held event in Yorkshire.

The school was also represented by Josh Whitehouse who claimed several huge ippon wins to come home with bronze in the open weight category.

Welshpool High School’s Reuben and Ffion Lovatt were also in action but both narrowly missed out on medals with respectable fifth place finishes.

The Lovatt sisters used the event to prepare for this weekend’s Thuringia Cup with the siblings set to represent Wales in Germany.

The sisters are both current Welsh champions and members of both the British Judo National Centre of Excellence and the Talent Cymru programme in Cardiff.

The talented sisters are among the next generation of martial arts talent to emerge from Mid Wales with both keen to follow in the footsteps of Irfon Judo Club trained Natalie Powell who has represented Great Britain at world and Olympic level.

Ffion has twice medalled for Wales at the British Schools Games while also claiming silver in the London and North West Open competitions.

Meanwhile Seren is a past gold medallist at the British Schools Championship and medal winner at the British Open.

Both have progressed through the Llandrinio-based Go Judo club since it was formed four years ago and received praise from their coach.

Proud coach Pete Castell said: “Their hard work and dedication to succeed has once again paid off.

“Both girls are funded only by themselves and the club where they train twice a week with sessions held on Tuesday and Friday.”
