POWYS completed a clean sweep of honours at last week’s Welsh Sportshall Finals.

The county squad made the trip to Cwmbran to field girls and boys sides in the under 13 and under 15 competitions against North West Wales, Dyfed, Afan Nedd Tawe and Cardiff Vale.

A never to be forgotten weekend culminated in Powys winning each team event and the athletes will now represent Wales in the British Finals to be held in Manchester on April 14-15.

To cap a remarkable weekend Llanfair Caereinion’s Keira McVeagh was crowned Welsh under 15s girls sportshall champion.

McVeagh ended with 142 points, just ahead of Powys team-mate Amber Bennett of Llanfyllin with 139, contributing to their side’s winning total of 670 points.

McVeagh won the shot and vertical jump with Bennett winning the two lap race while the Powys team won the 4x2 relay.

Welshpool’s Dottie Evans also took silver in the bounce with Llanfair Caereinion’s Sarah Astley ending second in the shot.

The under 15s boys were crowned national champions with 612 points having won the eight lap pairs run.

Brecon’s Simon Bayambou ended second in the four lap race with Llandrindod Wells’ Kenyon Montana taking silver in the long jump and Welshpool’s Mitchell Hunt ending second in the triple jump.

The under 13s girls were led to glory by vertical jump winner Ellie Phillips of Llanfair Caereinion, triple jump champion Polly Holloway of Newtown and Welshpool’s Maddie Griffiths who won the speed bounce.

Success in the eight lap pairs run helped Powys to 594 points and glory.

Welshpool’s Arthur Powell won the two lap race and shot as the under 13s boys stormed to 684 points and national glory.

Oliver Jones won the six lap time trial and fellow Newtown High School student Kamil Zajocowski won the bounce while success in the obstacle relay, eight lap pairs run, 4x2 relay and 4x1 relay ensured Powys a clean sweep of titles.

Coach Rhys Stephens said: “It is an amazing achievement to win all age groups. The team was selected after North and South regional events and the county finals.

“I must say a big thank you to the schools and the PE staff who continue to support Sportshall Athletics and enable us to travel with such competitive squads.

“Special mention to Amber Bennett who finished third in the under 15 girls individual event behind Keira McVeagh who was crowned Welsh champion in the same age group.”
