POWYS celebrated a successful Welsh Schools Cross Country Championship in Brecon last week.

Welshpool’s Maddie Griffiths was among the stand out performers with the young Maldwyn Harrier crowned Year 7 girls champion with a time of 12:03.

Gwernyfed’s Jack Organ won the Year 7 boys crown with Abigail Fisher of Crickhowell taking gold in the senior girls race.

Meanwhile the successful Newtown based Maldwyn Harriers club was well represented by a crop of its emerging talent.

Welshpool’s Callum Morgan ended sixth and Newtown’s Aled Breeze took seventh to help Powys to Year 7 boys glory.

Griffiths led home Powys’ Year 7 girls squad with Welshpool’s Gwen Kuipers taking 12th while Newtown’s Chloe Murton-Davies, Emma Griffiths and Piper Lloyd also impressed.

Newtown’s Ollie Jones prepared for his call up to the Welsh Schools squad for next month’s London Mini Marathon by ending 13th in the junior boys race while Llandrindod Wells’ Spencer Davies finished in 19th.

Welshpool’s Deiniol Owen ended 34th, just ahead of Llandrindod’s Sam Jones in 35th while Welshpool’s Lewis Wilde and Harvey Gill ended 46th and 59th.

Zoe De Zeeuw of Welshpool ended the junior girls race in 43rd spot with Newtown’s Olivia Robson just behind in 45th and Rheanna Morgan-Rogers of Llandrindod Wells in 47th.

Welshpool’s Carwyn Owen marked is call up to the Welsh junior squad for the Home Counties Cross Country in Nottingham with a fine seventh place in the Middle Boys race ahead of schoolmate Dillon Gill in 13th with Newtown’s Josh Wall ending 52nd.

Meanwhile Builth Wells’ Teigan Ward ended 21st in the middle girls race, just ahead of Newtown’s Leah Roberts in 27th and Charlie Kolano Rogers of Llandrindod Wells ended in 51st place.
