Pupils and staff at Llanrhaeadr-Ym-Mochnant school are celebrating after winning a prestigious sports trophy.

The Gareth Oldham Cup for PE and School Sport was awarded to the school by Powys County Council in recognition of their sporting excellent in the past year, and promoting healthy lifestyle choices at the school.

The cup is named in honour of Gareth Oldham, a former manager of Llandrindod Wells Sports Centre who became Powys’ first ever sport development officer in 1985.

Oldham served region until his promotion to Powys County Council sports development manager in 1996 and developed the infrastructure and team of officers which continue to deliver sport to schools across the county.

Oldham said “This year we were delighted to award the Montgomeryshire PE and School Sport cup to Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant for the outstanding work being undertaken throughout the whole school.

“Both the staff and pupils have worked so hard to create an ethos, whereby everybody is enthusiastic towards sport and healthy living.

“Everything at the school is based on fun, not winning, but the pupils exceeded all expectations both with their behaviour and their achievements at all sports events.”

Senior sports development officer for Powys County Council Tricia Turner said praised the Tanat Valley school for its commitment to sport and physical education.

Turner said: “It is honour to present Llanrhaeadr with this award.

“Each year it gets harder and harder to decide a winner.

“The all-round positive attitudes to physical activity is very evident and every child matters at this school. Congratulations to Llanrhaeadr Ym Mochnant.”
