CARRIE Jones has been called up to the Welsh women’s senior squad.

The Berriew Juniors and Newtown academy under 16s star has emerged through the national set-up and will complete her journey to the senior ranks in next month’s clashes against Bosnia and Russia.

Coach and sponsor Paul Inns heaped praise on the Newtown High School student and backed her to continue making history.

“I’m absolutely thrilled for Carrie,” said Inns. “This is a call up to a squad still in with a real chance of qualifying for the women’s World Cup and are sitting in second place in their qualifying group with only three matches left.

“For Jayne Ludlow, the Wales women’s manager to be calling Carrie up to the squad at this stage is a real statement of intent and recognition of the regard Carrie is held.”

Inns backed Jones to continue to trail blaze and inspire more girls to take up the game across Central Wales.

“Carrie is a fantastic role model for any aspiring young female footballers,” said Inns. “She has shown a pathway exists whereby players from Central Wales can reach the very top of the game by playing a good standard of football with local teams.

“If you’re good enough then you will get noticed.”

Inns added: “Carrie is already the consummate professional and a joy to coach. She listens attentively, is always wanting to learn and gives a 100 per cent both in training and matches.

“There really is no limit to what she can achieve in the women’s game.

“It’s no overstatement to say that she stands on the verge of becoming one of the greatest players Central Wales has ever produced, male or female.”

Inns has sponsored Jones through his position with Newtown-based solicitors Hanratty and Co but hoped further sponsorship could now be achieved to help cover travel costs to South Wales where the teenager attends weekly training.

Jones will not be the only Mid Walian in the Welsh dressing room for the crunch clashes with Newtown’s Lauren Smith assisting Ludlow in masterminding Wales’ bid to reach next year’s World Cup in France.
