RHAYADER Town Football Club hope to join the 3G revolution.

Representatives of the the Watson Financial Mid Wales League South champions met Welsh Assembly member for Brecon and Radnor Kirsty Williams on Monday.

Top of the agenda was the club’s ambitious plans to develop a 3G artificial sports at the Weirglodd.

A host of clubs across Wales have benefitted from the installation of 3G pitches during the past five years with the Radnorshire club confident such a facility would bring huge benefits to the region.

Club official and town councillor Dai Davies said: “The meeting was very positive and Kirsty Williams could see the potential the Weirglodd has to offer.

“This would be a massive boost to our area and would have such an impact on our already impressive successful adult and junior teams as well as other teams of various sports in the area.”

Davies underlined the growing gulf between sports facilities in Powys and the rest of Wales.

Despite being the largest county in Wales only one 3G pitch has been installed in Powys, Newtown’s Latham Park, while 44 have been installed in the other counties combined.

Davies said: “A 3G pitch in Rhayader would be ideally located and accessible for hosting finals at both regional and national levels.

“It could be used for other sports and the whole community, not only from Rhayader but surrounding towns such as Llandrindod Wells, Builth Wells, Llanidloes, Knighton and Presteigne.”

Meanwhile Rhayader Town Football Club will return to the Mid Wales League set-up next season.

The club won Spar Mid Wales League One last season but rather than step up to the Huws Gray Alliance the club dropped back into the Mid Wales League South.

Davies said: “It’s been tough rebuilding but we have taken a more local approach in what we wanted to achieve. We wanted to build a side based on youth and best local lads and we have.

“We have a great footballing background of producing quality players and that’s why we want to invest in them.”

“To preserve and push the club forward we have to put the investment into our next generation and it’s already reaped rewards with four lads in the first team under 17 years of age and key players.

“With senior players such as Gareth Hughes and Matt Lewis we now feel we are going in the right direction as a club.

“We are looking forward to the challenge of Spar Mid Wales League Two next season.

“ It will be a big step up but the future is definitely bright for Rhayader Town Football Club.”
