LLANFAIR United battled to a 2-1 victory over Knighton Town to become the first club to book a place in the semi-finals of this season’s Central Wales Cup.

The all Spar Mid Wales League One encounter was contested in gruelling conditions with Mount Field peppered by heavy snow showers throughout the contest.

Llanfair broke the deadlock on 13 minutes with Karl Seliaerts seizing on a loose ball after Andrew Hughes’ effort was blocked in a packed goalmouth.

The remainder of the half saw both sides battle for possession with chances at a premium.

However the hosts doubled their lead after the break with youngster Josh Astley finding the net with a free-kick on the hour.

Knighton refused to yield and to their credit set-up a tense finale when Declan Beddoes reduced the arrears with seven minutes remaining.

However Llanfair were not to be denied and held firm for the remainder of the contest to book their place in the last four.

Elsewhere the eagerly anticipated derby between Llandrindod Wells and Builth Wells was a victim of the weather with Broadway unplayable.

The weekend blizzard also put paid to Waterloo Rovers’ scheduled clash at home to Caersws on Sunday with sides set to try again this Sunday.

Meanwhile Guilsfield booked their place in the semi-finals after overcoming Bow Street at Clos Mytton on Tuesday night.

Street were indebted to goalkeeper Tom Williams who took over in goal after regular incumbent Ben Willis was injured and produced several stunning saves as the match ended goalless after extra-time.

Guils goalkeeper Lee Andrew seized his moment of glory in the resulting shoot-out with two saves helping his side to a 4-3 victory.
