Welshpool Town have been handed a wildcard entry into next season's Welsh Premier League Cup.

Rhyl, Flint Town United, Ton Pentre will join Welshpool as the other successful wildcard applicants, and will join the twelve sides from the JD Welsh Premier League and six teams each from the Huws Gray Alliance and Welsh League Division One in next season's competition.

In last season's final, TNS defeated Cardiff Met 1-0 at Aberystwyth to lift the trophy for the third year in succession.

"The club has seen the highs and lows of local football but by re-visiting the vision for the club it has hopefully been put on firmer ground than it has been for many years with a bright future ahead," said a spokesperson for Welshpool Town.

"For the club to even consider entering a tournament such as this 5 years ago would have been unthinkable but it does so now safe in the knowledge that a challenge such as this would be a true reward for the hard work put into the club by so many people."

One of Welsh football's oldest football clubs, Welshpool were founded in 1878. 2018 marks the 140th anniversary of the club, and the club says entry to the competition is a "fitting celebration".
