MARY Griffiths etched her name into club folklore as Llanfair United overcame Aberystwyth Town to be crowned Central Wales Women’s Cup winners in Llanidloes on Friday.

United hit back from an early deficit and survived a desperate late fightback from the holders to lift the silverware for the first time.

Victory also ensured Llanfair crowned cup winners at the third time of asking having lost two previous finals against the Seasiders.

Aberystwyth led inside the opening 10 minutes through Naomi Evans but struggled to impose themselves on the game and were punished soon after with Sarah Ellis restoring parity.

Llanfair led for the first time on 36 minutes with a sensational lob by Griffiths sending the travelling United faithful into rapture.

Griffiths was again in the limelight shortly after the break with a cool penalty conversion after Sarah Ellis was clattered in the area.

The Seasiders piled on the pressure and reduced the arrears with 10 minutes remaining with a second from Evans but Llanfair were not to be denied and held firm to be crowned cup winners for the first time.

Jubilant midfielder Nora Davies said: “It was a great team effort, everyone gave a 100 per cent and it paid off. We made sure this year the cup was ours and it was coming back to Llanfair with us.”

Goalkeeper Catrin Roberts added: “It’s an amazing feeling to be Central Wales Cup champions and we thoroughly deserved it.

“The girls and our manager Matt Evans have worked really hard for this.

“It was a great team effort and and I am so proud to be part of Llanfair United Ladies.”
