Penrhyncoch 0 Gresford Athletic 3

PENRHYNCOCH were left to focus on league survival after their cup dreams were dashed by Gresford Athletic in Aberystwyth.

The second round clash was switched to Park Avenue with Penrhyn’s Cae Baker ground unavailable.

The Roosters started brightly with Nashawn Blake’s shot deflected over the bar before Jonny Evans’ cross was headed wide by Antonio Corbisiero.

However the Wrexham side broke the deadlock against the run of play on 16 minutes with Mike Latham’s low free-kick drilled through a packed goalmouth and beyond goalkeeper Aneurin Thomas.

Both sides had chances with Matt Mousley’s cross fumbled by goalkeeper Joey Jones before Thomas bravely denied Tom Freeman at the other end.

Dangerman Jonny Evans also whipped a free-kick inches wide while Owain James also tested Jones as Penrhyncoch ended the half on top.

It was a similar story after the break with Evans forcing a superb point blank save from Jones.

However Gresford doubled their lead on the hour with Latham’s low cross finding the back of the net via a deflection past Thomas.

Penrhyncoch dominated the remainder of the game but struggled to find any way through the Gresford rearguard led by Max Peate.

However the Wrexham side had the final say and with seconds remaining the outstanding Latham swivelled in the box to lash beyond Thomas and send his side into the semi-finals.
