Four Crosses 0 Newcastle Emlyn 5

FOUR Crosses’ Emrys Morgan Cup dreams fell flat at the last hurdle as Newcastle Emlyn proved a class above at Rhayader on Friday.

The Costcutter Ceredigion League side took the game to Crosses from the start.

Crosses defender Steve Pugh made a host of vital challenges while Shin Miah cleared off his line as the villagers held Emlyn at bay.

Crosses carved several openings with Jack Jones firing wide and Jamie Evans failing to test the Emlyn goalkeeper during the opening exchanges.

Emlyn broke the deadlock midway through the half after Crosses failed to deal with a free-kick as Jake Kelly side footed past goalkeeper Dan Wood.

Wood denied Dion Phillips with a superb double save but Crosse shot themselves in the foot soon after when caught in possession as Kelly raced through to net at the second attempt.

Crosses started the second-half brightly with Harry Davies twice firing wide before Emlyn settled the final on the hour with Phillips heading home a free-kick.

Crosses continued to attack with Ben Simms going close before Emlyn added a fourth with George Lowry finishing from 18 yards following a swift break.

Newcastle Emlyn completed their scoring late on with another free-kick into the goalmouth, which was headed home by an unmarked Craig Gordon.

Crosses manager Mike Barton said: “I am hugely disappointed with our display. We didn’t get going at all.

“Fair play to Newcastle Emlyn who battered us for 90 minutes and thoroughly deserved their victory.

“We must now move on and not let it effect us going forward. We still have promotion to go for and still in village, league cup and semi finals of Montgomeryshire Cup so have much to look forward to.”
