Llanfair United 3 Carno 1

If there was ever a game to define the term, ‘a game of two halves’ then this was it. Carno were in control for much of the first half, Llanfair dominating the second half.

The game started at a fast pace with Carno doing most of the attacking and creating some good opportunities for themselves.

Mark Richards in the Llanfair goal was being kept busy and produced some fine saves.

The away side opened the scoring on 32 minutes, a good cross from the left flank to the far post was headed back across goal allowing Scott Williams to tap home from close range.

The goal was richly deserved by Carno and they continued to press forward in search of a second goal. That vital second goal was not forthcoming and Llanfair actually started to slowly get back into the game towards the end of the half.

On the stroke of half time, Llanfair made the game 1-1.

A corner was well delivered from the right finding Ben Jones six yards from goal with a free header.

Jones made no mistake and powered his header into the net.

The equalizer for Llanfair seemed to give them some confidence as the second half got under way and they were now the dominant team. Paul Griffiths had a good chance to make it 2-1 to Llanfair on 49 minutes but could not keep his shot from 12 yards down, with the ball sailing over the bar.

Andrew Hughes was looking dangerous for the home side and in fact almost grabbed a goal on 53 minutes, glancing a header just wide of the near post.

Carno did well to prevent Llanfair from scoring on 63 minutes, Ben Jones sent over a great cross from the right, Hughes low shot was well saved with the rebounded effort cleared off the line.

Llanfair made their pressure tell on 75 minutes, a long ball from the back found that man Hughes in space, his shot hit the far post with the ball falling to the feet of Josh Astley who made no mistake and tapped the ball into an unguarded net.

Carno did produce a couple of half chances after falling behind but the game was made safe for the home side three minutes into injury time. A great passing team move ended with Paul Griffiths firing home from just inside the penalty into the far corner.

The game finished 3-1, both sides were very impressive at times, the game was a great advert for Spar Mid Wales Division One football.
