WALES under 15s girls took on Scotland in an international double header last weekend.

Captained by Newtown’s Carrie Jones, the Welsh squad included fellow emerging stars Libby Isaac of Newtown and Maria Francis-Jones of Llanidloes.

Jones is a product of the Berriew junior system while Isaac was nurtured by TNS with Francis-Jones the latest of a long line of talented players to emerge from Llanidloes.

Each have played key roles in helping their school’s sides enjoy success in the Welsh Schools Cup during the past few years.

Wales lost both games, suffering a 3-1 defeat at Llandudno’s Maesdu Park on Friday before slipping to a 3-0 defeat at Cefn Druids’s Rock Stadium on Monday.

However the Mid Wales trio each boosted their hopes of inclusion in the under 15s squad to take part in the Brittany Cup in France later this month with impressive contributions.

Jones netted Wales’ only goal and led the young Dragons by example during the two day test.

Meanwhile Isaac and Francis-Jones both underlined their potential with midfielder Isaac going close with a 25 yard free-kick on Friday night while striker Francis-Jones was denied by the woodwork in the second game.

Manager Matthew Clement said: “We must take our chances and we had plenty. If you don’t do that at this level, you’re always going to struggle.”

However Clement remained upbeat and insisted positives would be taken from the games going into the Brittany Cup and the Bob Docherty Cup in Ireland.

“We’re competing without getting the results we deserve and we’ve learned a lot over two games,” said Clement. “We’re making too many mistakes and we’ve got to correct that.”

Despite four straight defeats, Clement insists his struggling squad can still retain the annual trophy that they won in Dublin last year and believes the losses will create opportunities for others.

He said: “We have a lot of talented players but we must be more resilient and compact and only then we can express ourselves when we win the ball.

“Brittany is a good opportunity for the players to right a wrong and for new players to come in and show what they can do before we look ahead to the Bob Docherty Cup.”
