EFFORTS to reform a senior women’s section at Newtown Football Club stepped up this week.

The club has joined the Football Association of Wales (FAW) initiative to increase female participation across the country.

Newtown previously ran a side in the North Powys Women’s League until both club and league disbanded in 2014.

Since interest has increased with successful girls and women’s festivals hosted and the establishment of club hubs across the region and two senior clubs in Llanfair United and Llanidloes Town.

Organiser Sam Morris said: “We are planning on starting a women’s only football session and maybe start a ladies team again in the future.

“We are doing research to see what day and time is best for them to take part and encourage all aspiring players to make contact.

“We are aiming for about 15 women to start then hopefully that will grow and sessions can start in March if we have interest.”
