Rhyl 2 Caersws 1

CAERSWS remain deep in the relegation dogfight after failing to ruin Rhyl’s end of season party at Belle Vue.

The hosts marked their final home game of the campaign with a guard of honour for retiring club legend Jamie Brewerton.

However the opening period of the match proved a scrappy and wind dominated affair with neither side able to get to grips.

Caersws went close with Steve Blenkinsop heading over while Luke Sherbon also tested home goalkeeper Rory Crowther.

On 25 minutes the villagers survived a let off when a 35 yard blast from Tom Hartley rattled the bar with goalkeeper David Jones rooted.

Despite having the better of the possession the home side’s best efforts to penetrate the Bluebirds defence proved fruitless as Caersws weathered the storm.

It was a similar story after the break with Jones soon in action to deny Phil Marsh.

However Rhyl led on 49 minutes with Marsh steering Mark Connolly’s cross beyond Jones as the deadlock was finally broken.

Rhyl had their tails up with Marsh going close to adding his second before Jones was called upon once again to deny Aaron Pomeyie.

Caersws were back in the game on the hour as Rhyl goalkeeper Rory Crowther sliced an attempted clearance into the path of Blenkinsop who made no mistake.

Rhyl almost hit back within minutes with Pomeyie rounding Jones only for his shot to be blocked in the packed goalmouth.

Caersws almost led when Craig Harris’’ 25 yard effort clipped the bar with Crowther beaten.

However Rhyl continued to ask questions with Pomeyie causing the Bluebirds defence problems.

The pressure told as Rhyl regained the lead on 77 minutes with Jason Jeffries rising above the Caersws defence to steer a header beyond Jones.

Caersws rang the changes with the introduction of Aron Hughes-Jones causing Rhyl problems.

The on loan TNS youngster jinked his way into the danger area to set up Sherbon who forced Crowther into a top drawer save.
