NEWTOWN let fellow strugglers Shelton off the hook at the Recreation Ground to remain precariously close to the relegation zone.
The Mid Wales hosts opened the batting in confident fashion with Stephen Davies and Dai Brown combining.

Davies was unlucky to be run out by Matthew Morris for 22, while Brown was caught for 34 by Ben Matthews off Andy Wigginton (1-46).

Darren
Grant kept the run rate going with a useful 20 before falling to Ishan Radotra, who also claimed newcomer John Cadwallader for two.

The middle order failed to get Newtown back on track as Radotra claimed two more victims with Brian Jones (8) and Alan Jones (15) stumped.

However Nick Davies (15) and a superb unbeaten tail-end contribution from skipper Craig Davies (24no) steered Newtown to 147-7.

Newtown needed to draw some early blood in reply and Dave Anthony was soon celebrating after bowling opener Wigginton for a duck.

Newtown also exacted revenge on Radotra when caught by Brown for 17 off the dangerous Rowan Meek.

Shelton continued to struggle for runs as Alan Jones (2-13) and Meek (2-15) ripped through the middle order.

Jonathan Davies (2-14) chipped in with two wickets but the home side struggled to break up the crucial ninth wicket partnership of Adam Humphreys and Ben Chambers.

Humphreys (7no) and Chambers (1no) stood firm to see out the overs and deny Newtown a much-needed maximum haul.

Chairman Peter Davies said: “Shelton were very poor and did not offer anything. They were never going to be capable of matching our total.

“Obviously it is disappointing to have let them off the hook but there were some good partnerships formed on the day which is something for us to build on.”
