NEWTOWN won the battle but lost the war as Aberystwyth Town Reserves lifted the league title at Latham Park.
Aber boss Emyr Jones was disappointed with the defeat but insisted it did not deflect from the Seasiders’ double winning season, which included the Central Wales League triumph.

“I am very proud of all the players,” said Jones. “Perhaps we took our foot off the gas for our final game but we had already done the hard work over the season.”

Newtown were determined to ruin the Seasiders’ big day and Barry Bellis scrambled them ahead from close range after Aberystwyth Town goalkeeper Llew Hughes spilled Gareth Mansell’s cross.

Aberystwyth were back on terms by the break with Tiago Silva profiting from a defensive lapse to steer home.

The second-half saw both sides struggle in the humid conditions until the game swung back in Newtown’s favour.

Former Aberystwyth Town youngster Richie Evans created room on the edge of the area before drilling past Hughes.

With five minutes remaining Rob Bennett’s cross failed to be cleared, with Evans on hand to net his second.
