Newtown AFC defends cup final stewards
NEWTOWN AFC have defended their stewards after the ruckus that followed the mass pitch invasion during last weekend's Welsh Cup Final at Latham Park.
A 92nd minute equaliser for Chris Seargeant saw Bangor City draw level with Llanelli and sparked a pitch invasion behind the Reds goal.
Llanelli goalkeeper Duncan Roberts was struck by an invading City supporter and the game was held up for several minutes.
Llanelli manager Peter Nicholas has blasted the City supporters for their actions, while popular unofficial Bangor City fans' website Citizens Choice has included posts blaming the match stewards.
However Newtown have been quick to defend the volunteer stewards and the club's own “meticulous” preparations.
A club spokesman added: "With an anticipated crowd in excess of 1,000, we pressed the FAW for a lunchtime kick-off which has always been traditional for a Welsh Cup Final.
"The FAW advised us that S4C would not alter their scheduling and insisted on initially a 4.30pm kick off which was then brought forward to 4.05pm. We asked the FAW to ask S4C to reconsider the kick off time but they refused."
Dyfed Powys Police and Newtown Football Club are currently viewing footage of the incident.
