WELSHPOOL Town officials are insisting the resignation of chairman Steve Hughes will not derail the club's bid to become a Welsh Premier power.
Hughes (right) resigned as Welshpool Town chairman and managing director at a club board meeting on Monday night, after six year’s at the helm.

Hughes cited “business reasons” behind his decision to resign from both roles.

Hughes said: “I am about to undertake a major change in business direction and feel that the time is now right for me to stand aside,”

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Welshpool Town Football Club and will continue to back the club in every possible way while I hope to return to the fold sometime in the future.

“In the meantime I am confident that the club is in good hands and is set up to be a very competitive Welsh Premier League side this season.”

His decision to resign with immediate effect leaves vice chairman Craig Humphreys and general manager Graham Breeze at the helm until a new chairman and managing director are appointed.

Breeze was quick to allay supporters’ fears the club will now struggle to hold its own in the Welsh Premier without the backing of the car dealer.

“Steve will be a big loss,” said Breeze. “He did a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes and put the infrastructure in place to ensure this club could continue its development.

“The club is in a healthy position and on behalf of the club I would like to stress that Steve’s decision will not affect the club’s on the pitch progress.”
