JAMIE Haynes struck the winner to give Caersws a precious opening day victory over Caernarfon Town.
Haynes was one of just three starting players to have been retained as the newlook Bluebirds began their first full season under Dave Taylor’s watch.

Haynes was on hand to break the deadlock on 37 minutes when he steered home a Mark Davies cross.

The goal was no more than Caersws deserved for dominating the first-half with debutant Chris Melia winning a 14th minute penalty after being upended by Canaries No1 Chris Dunn.

However the former Connah’s Quay Nomad failed to convert the spot-kick with Dunn anticipating and making a great save.

Caersws continued to encourage the Recreation Ground faithful and on 37 minutes former TNS starlet Davies picked out Haynes to score.

The second-half saw Caernarfon create openings but sorely lacked any form of cutting edge.

Paul Addo and Steve Johnson forced saves from Caersws goalkeeper John Rowley in the Canaries’ best moments of the game.

Haynes almost returned the compliment when he crossed for Davies to blaze over from a corner as Caersws sought to seal victory.

Haynes remained a livewire throughout but spurned a late opening to make the game safe while substitute Ross Jefferies also screwed a shot wide for Caersws.

Manager Dave Taylor said: “It was brilliant to get a win under our belts and we intend to build on this.

“Caernarfon Town played some good football but we defended resolutely and stuck together as a team.

“Everyone is still going to predict Caersws to go down but that suits us just fine, but I think we have a squad capable of causing more shocks this season.”

“There is a great spirit in the camp at the moment and I truly believe we are only one or two players short of having a really good side.

“There is no expectation because we have already been tipped to go down by the so called experts, but I am confident that these players can prove them all wrong this season.

“Now we go to Llanelli where all the pressure will be on them as league champions.”
