Flower has the power to triumph in the ring

JOFF Flower enhanced his already glowing reputation with another victory at Newtown Amateur Boxing Club's exhibition evening last weekend.
The Rhayader-based Welsh under 74kg novice champion outfought Aberystwyth’s Gary Pocock in one of the outstanding fight’s of the night.

Coach Steve Chapple-Gill said: “Joff continues to improve with every competitive fight and the performance against Pocock goes to show he is not intimidated by anyone.”

Flower set about leaving his mark in the first round but the Aberystwyth boxer made several firm body shots.

Following advice from his corner Flower upped the ante in the third round and triumphed with a unanimous points decision over Pocock.

Over 300 people crammed into Newtown’s Monty Club for the event, which attracted several leading personalities in the world of Welsh boxing.

Among them was Brian Coleman - a member of current WBC, WBO and IBF super middleweight Champion of the World Joe Calzaghe’s coaching team.

Chapple-Gill said: “Brian paid us the ultimate compliment in telling us how well-organised the event was.”

The night was sponsored by Celtic Developments, with further support from other local companies.

The evening also marked a special occasion as Newtown Boxers old and new paid tribute to Les Bridge who has served the club for several decades.

“He has donated so much of his time to the club that we wanted to mark it with a successful exhibition night in the town,” said Chapple-Gill.

The Daniel Lister Memorial Trophy for the top Newtown boxer went to14-year-old 58kg boxer Joe Evans.
