Castle prevail in border battle
BISHOPS Castle overhauled Montgomery in the second division table after completing a two wicket win over their bitter rivals.
Visiting captain Neil Tuffin elected to open the batting and was keen to post a challenging target on the quick outfield.
However Castle made steady inroads into the visitors’ batting order with Montgomery left precariously placed on 96-5.
A solid 6th wicket partnership of 72 between Keith Griffiths (32) and Tim Davies (31) helped them to post a slightly below par 187-9 off their 45 overs.
Edgar Whately picked up 3-19 off just four overs with Mike Davies (2-32), Mark Griffiths (2-36) and Stephen Morris (2-54) also chipping in with vital wickets.
Castle sped off in reply and took 19 from the opening two overs before losing Rhys Davies (13) and Morris (5) to leave them on just 22-2 off four overs.
Castle were saved by an excellent third wicket stand of 99 between Edgar Whately (28) and the top scoring Richard Fifield (57).
Skipper Jonathan Price chipped in with a good 24, which left Castle requiring 50 off the last nine overs with six wickets in hand.
Some nervous batting combined with some inspired bowling from Tuffin (5-37) ensured the derby contest went to the wire.
Castle reached the target off the first ball of the last over with Richard Whately (4no) calmly clipping the required single to the leg side in an unbroken partnership with Mark Griffiths (14no) as the home side sealed 20 points.
