BUILTH Wells fired an opening day title warning to the rest of the first division with a 140 run thrashing of Kington IIIs.
Builth never looked back following a bright start which saw openers Gerald Morgan (49) and Sam Buckler (35) lay down the foundations.

Winston Williams (22) kept the runs ticking over with Nic Lee also chipping in with a useful 20 as the Wyesiders
underlined their batting calibre.

However the limelight belonged to Tim Richards who steered Builth Wells to a massive score of 230-6 with an unbeaten knock of 58.

Lee Traylor (3-25) was the most economical for Kington with Andy Yates (1-25), Joe Penrose (1-53) and Brian Lloyd (1-52) also taking wickets.

Builth turned to old head Rob Wall to skittle Kington for just 90 in reply to secure victory in the 25th over.

Stuart Mundy (20) and Scott Jones (23) provided the most prolonged defence but eventually became victims of veteran Wall (5-17).

Jamie McIlroy (2-16) and Jeff Carter (2-12) also claimed wickets for Builth.

Elsewhere Llandrindod Wells’ prayers for opening weekend action went unheeded as their home test with Luctonians was postponed. They must now wait for their first taste of competitive action when they face Glangrwyney at home this weekend.

Meanwhile a thriller at Presteigne saw the home side lose their season opener to newcomers Dorstone by just one single run.

Despite James Smith (1-59) and Gary Rhodes (1-48) claiming early wickets Dorstone were soon tearing away with Karl Warne (189) and Nick Osbourne (82) pushing the score to 216 for three.

An unbeaten sixth wicket partnership between Rob Garrard (28no) and Gareth Swain (5no) saw Dortsone close on 329.

Presteigne went for broke in reply and a superb 200 run stand between James and John Bray for the first wicket gave them hope.

John Bray was caught for 69 off Garrard (5-62) with Rhodes (16) and Mike Bevan (36) joining James Bray in pushing their side to 277-3.

Bray was bowled by Steve Goodwin (3-43) after firing 16 fours and 11 sixes in a sublime 166.

With Bray gone the Presteigne middle order collapsed and left Smith to carry the bat in hope of victory.

However despite a determined display from Smith (14no) Dortsone celebrated victory after bowling Matt Bufton with the final ball.

Builth Wells IIs won their division four opener by seven runs at Hereford CSC.

Mark Stafford-Tolley (78), Gary Morgan (32), Paul Greenway (18) and Adam Morgan (14no) helped Builth to a respectable 190-6.

Hereford’s reply was led by Trevor Booth, who fired seven sixes in his 97 before being dismissed by Greenway (4-28) as the hosts were bowled out for 183.

Adam Morgan (4-55) also shared the wickets haul as Builth celebrated a bright start.

Knighton lost their closely contested division four match with Almley by three wickets.
