WELSHPOOL Town have been dealt a bitter blow ahead of the new Welsh Premier season after star midfielder Chris Venables defected to Mid Wales rivals Aberystwyth Town.
The 22-year-old Welsh semi-professional international joins ex-Caersws team-mates Graham Evans and Colin Reynolds at Park Avenue.

Venables scored eight goals in 28 appearances for the Lilywhites last season following a four-year spell at Caersws.

Welshpool Town manager Tommi Morgan said: "It is obviously disappointing that Chris has chosen to leave but I would like to thank him for all his efforts on behalf of the club.

"I wish him well in his future career and hope he does well at Aberystwyth Town."

Welshpool Town have also parted company with striker Aden Shannon and defender Paul Dowridge who have joined Gap Connah's Quay Nomads.

Shannon netted an amazing 36 goals in 59 games during a four season spell at Maesydre but struggled to hold down a starting berth.

Dowridge joined the Lilywhites from Airbus UK Broughton in 2004 and has since made 86 appearances.

Meanwhile defender Brett Jefferies and striker Ross Jefferies have also departed Maesydre.

However despite the summer exodus manager Morgan insisted Welshpool would be competitive next season.

"Aden and Paul needed new challenges and I wish them well," said Morgan. "Their departures will allow other players to stake a claim.

"I have also identified several players as possible new signings and we can be optimistic about next season.

"The club has improved its standing in the league over the years and quality players want to join us.

"I cannot wait until next season and there are some exciting developments ahead for our supporters."

Morgan also welcomed former Llansantffraid manager Graham Breeze to the club as general manager.

"Graham is a well-known and popular figure across Welsh football and he will offer us invaluable experience in getting the club ready to meet the new ground criteria."
