BERRIEW opened their Spar Mid Wales League campaign with a battling victory at a windswept Penparcau.
The league newcomers were unable to match the Rhiwsiders’ clinical edge, which saw them take an early lead with a header from summer signing Martyn Ziemann.

Berriew doubled their lead when fellow new arrival Neil Pryce was upended by Penparcau goalkeeper Tom Sheehy with Mark Jones netting the resulting penalty.

Jones looked to have doubled his tally when he struck an unstoppable free-kick only for the effort to be ruled out for an infringement.

Penparcau came to life after the break and were unlucky not to reduce the arrears with Lee Jones twice rocking the visiting side’s woodwork.

However Berriew dug in for an opening day victory while Penparcau will take positives from their eagerly anticipated return to the league.
