CHRIS Herbert believes the signing of midfielder Tom Evans can springboard Technogroup Welshpool to Huws Gray Alliance survival.

The talented midfielder this week traded hometown club Montgomery Town for a fresh challenge with a revamped Welshpool.

Welshpool manager Herbert praised the former TNS academy player, who has made a name for himself as a key performer in Montgomery’s midfield over the past three years.

“He is a player I have wanted to bring to Welshpool since I was appointed manager,” admitted Herbert.

“I do not live in Montgomeryshire but was quite aware of Tom’s attributes due to his shining performances for Montgomery.”

Herbert hopes Evans’ arrival can further illustrate his commitment to adopting a local policy.

“I want people to know that things are different at Welshpool nowadays and that local lads will be given every opportunity.

“Hopefully Tom will be the first of many local lads signing for Welshpool.”

Evans will make his debut in this Monday’s Huws Gray Alliance clash with Rhayader Town.

“He has been shining in the Mid Wales League and deserves his chance,” said Herbert. “I would also like to thank officials at Montgomery Town who helped ensure Tom would be eligible to play for Welshpool on Monday.”

Montgomery Town have enjoyed a solid start to life in the second division of the Spar Mid Wales League, but have conceded his departure was a blow.

A statement read: “While we are very disappointed to lose Tom, we wouldn't want to stand in his way of playing at a higher level and we wish him well with his new club.

“Tom's loss will no doubt be significant but it now gives someone else a chance to step up. The club's title aspirations remain the same and there is still enough quality at the club to achieve this.”
