MARK Jones’ testimonial season will culminate in a star-studded match at the Groe in Builth Wells on May 22.
The Scarlets and Wales international has retained a close bond with the club that launched him on the road to his 47 caps, and Builth Wells director of rugby David Jones said the Bulls are proud to be playing a role in his testimonial season.
“This will be a big celebration of Mark’s career,” said Jones. “Having progressed through the Builth Wells ranks, the whole town is proud of what he has gone on to achieve in his rugby career.
“He was the top try scorer in his one season at Llandovery and has since been a mainstay with Llanelli and latterly the Scarlets and Wales.
“Nowadays not many players spend a decade with the same club, so this is deserved recognition for a top player and loyal friend of Builth Wells Rugby Club.”
Jones has always retained his strong links with the Groe having coached several of the Bulls junior sides over the last few years.
“Mark has always enjoyed coming back to the area and we are thrilled to be taking such an active role in celebrating his career.”
The weekend begins with a special celebration dinner at the Royal Welsh Showground on Friday, May 21. Then on Saturday a Mark Jones Select XV will take on an Overseas Select XV with a bumper gate anticipated.
“Mark has played with and against some of the world’s top players over the last 10 years so it will be interesting to see who is available,” said Jones.
“Such information will only become available as the date gets nearer, but we expect some big names.”
Jones represented Wales at under 18, 19 and 20 levels before a first team debut as a replacement against England in the 2001 Six Nations.
This season saw Jones made captain of Scarlets, having played 155 games and scored 83 tries in his 11 year association with Llanelli.
Scarlets coach Nigel Davies said: “Mark embodies everything that the Scarlets stand for. In addition to his talent and experience on the field, he has shown he has great pride and belief in the region's values and its ethos.”
