NEWTOWN’S Dolerw Park was once again the setting for the 2010 Powys Schools Cross Country Championship.
Athletes from across the region descended on the popular venue, with most schools enjoying varied success.
Llandrindod High School’s Heidi Davies won the Year Seven girls race with Welshpool’s Abigail Bowers, Sarah Williams and Vicky Gittins securing top positions to ensure their school took the team prize.
In the junior girls category Welshpool’s Alex Cawthra was triumphant from Builth Wells High School’s Larissa Davies and Abi Wyatt of Brecon High School.
However the team award went to Llanfyllin, after Frankie Curteis and Jess Butler secured top 10 finishes.
Unsurprisingly the battle for middle girls domination was between Llandrindod Wells’ twin sisters Ffion and Rhiannwedd Price.
Both are highly rated athletes in their own right, with Ffion taking the honours this time, while Gemma Jones of Llanidloes High School was third; while also helping her school win the team award.
The senior girls race was dominated by Christ College of Brecon, with Elle Davies ending first.
The monopoly was broken by second placed Ella Hogg of Brecon, but sisters Hannah and Sophie Meinertyhyn were third and fourth to ensure Christ College the overall team accolade.
Meanwhile the lower junior boys event produced a tight finish with Newtown narrowly edging out Caereinion A in the overall table.
Charlie Humphreys was Newtown’s hero in first place, from Caereinion duo Nyasha Mwamuka and Gruffydd Martin who gallantly led their school’s challenge.
The junior boys event was even tighter, with Welshpool and Newtown ending locked on 61 points.
Callum Love and Michael Whyte were first and second respectively for Newtown, with Llanidloes’ Rhys Evans ending third.
However top 10 finishes from Dan Jones, George Davies and Rhys Phillips ensured Welshpool overall glory.
Newtown’s Joe Evans was the middle boys winner, from Llanfyllin’s Bradley Hunter and Caereinion duo Hywel Bennett and Tomos Martin.
Once again however it was Llanfyllin who snatched overall victory with a number of high finishes.
Llanidloes were winners of the competitive senior boys race, with Dan Williams beating classmate Peter Spreall to the finishing line, with the pair united in celebration as their school ended top of the overall event table.
